What your babysitter can teach you about dealing with customers

Have you ever seen babies in business suits? The idea seems a little weird, doesn’t it?

Yet you see them all day and you do business with them. You would not get your bread and butter but for those babies in business suits! (Hey that’s alliteration!

Yup, you guessed it.

We are talking about your customers!

If you come across a difficult customer, picture the image of a child in that suit. It’d be funny, yes, but that’s exactly what your customer is – a child!

How do you handle children?
What do you do if a friend asks you to babysit her two year old kid? Perhaps you make sure that there are dolls to play with. You sweet talk the child.

You show the kid some colorful pictures. You play a song. Or sing one yourself (at your own risk!). Or let the baby go to sleep. But essentially you’ll do all that you can to keep the baby from crying, won’t you?

Because it is the most difficult thing to pacify a child that is upset and screaming and kicking!

Your customer is no different!
It is equally difficult to pacify an angry customer. Because, most of the time, you can put only as much sense into an angry customer’s head as you can into a screaming baby’s.

In majority of the cases, it is how you handle the customers that matters more than the issues they might have. You may be right, the customer may be wrong – but there is a way to handle the issue.

What is the way?
The way to solve the issue or rather, prevent an issue lies in understanding the mind of the customer.Does a child just a few months old speak? Does it say “I want milk now “or “I want to sleep now”? Doesn’t Mommy understand beforehand what the child wants?

Even for a business, it is important for one to understand the mind of the customer. To handle issues and to retain the customer, one has to learn the psychology of the customer.
